Madrid is a cosmopolitan city, to its customs, culture and art, at the same time it is a modern place, housing cultural, economic and political centers of the first order in Europe. Its cultural and leisure offer ranges from free entry to museums to the most exclusive VIP environments.

The most recommended and most sought after areas to stay in Madrid are, as in almost all European cities, those in the central area. Places like Sol, Madrid de los Austrias, Huertas, or Gran Vía are a total success whatever brings you to the capital of Spain.
In addition to the most central areas, there are others very close such as Malasaña, Chueca, Chamberí, or Barrio Salamanca, to name a few, which are also a great choice for staying in Madrid.
Puerta del Sol is the center of Madrid. It is one of the most touristic spots in the capital of Spain since a large part of the tourist attractions are found in its surroundings. It is Km 0 of all the radial roads in Spain, and in its square is one of the most emblematic symbols of the city: The Bear and the Strawberry Tree.
Madrid de los Austrias is the oldest neighborhood in the city. This area is touching the Sun and is probably the most attractive part of the city for tourists.
It's not really a neighborhood per se. I wouldn't know whether to place it in the Madrid of the Austrias or in Lavapiés. In any case, it is one of my favorite places to go out for tapas and beers.
